Our Charities

Movies by Burswood's mission statement is to assist charities that seek to improve the quality of life of children in a health or physical ability crisis.

Over its nine years Movies by Burswood (Inc) has supported a wide range of children's charities who work with Movies by Burswood (itself a registered charity under the WA Charitable Collections Act) to present the event. Over 400 volunteers annually contribute their time and energy to make Bankwest Movies by Burswood Perth's most affordable, enjoyable and family-friendly outdoor cinema.

To date Movies by Burswood has raised over $3,000,000 directly for its Charity Partners and has assisted many other charities in their fund raising activities.

Over the years we have assisted Camp Quality, Noah’s Ark, Youth Focus WA, Speakeasy WA, St George Foundation, Youthcare, Kids’ Cancer Group at Princess Margaret Hospital, Heart Kids WA, Kids’ Camps WA and the Perth Inner City Youth Service (PICYS) amongst others.

This Season Bankwest Movies by Burswood has the following as its major official Charity Partners:

Starlight Children's Foundation

Visit Website

Starlight Children’s Foundation’s mission is to brighten the lives of all seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia.

Since 1988 Starlight has been providing its services Australia-wide to help seriously ill children and their families get through the difficult times caused by illness. Starlight’s programs are delivered in and out of hospital providing positive distraction to children in their time of need, restoring the fun, laughter and joy that serious illness takes away.

Living with illness or injury can cause enormous strain in the lives of children and their families. The pain, loneliness and isolation that sick children feel dominates their lives to the extent that they often miss out on the fun, laughter and normal experiences that healthy children take for granted.

Physical recovery is only part of the solution. Starlight delivers programs designed to make children happy and lift their spirits when they need it most. Starlight brings fun and laughter to children no matter what their illness or where they live.

Currently Starlight reaches only ‘one in three’ of the 600,000 child admissions made to Australian hospitals each year.

As community members you are able to support Starlight through attending the events community partners such as Movies by Burswood provide allowing us to reach our goal of reaching ALL children and their families when they need it the most.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at Bankwest Movies by Burswood enjoying a great evening!

Ronald McDonald House Charities

Visit Website

Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Perth provides a 'home away from home' for families of seriously ill regional children undergoing treatment for cancer and other life threatening illnesses at Princess Margaret Hospital, and since RMH opened in November 1990, more than 3000 families have passed through our doors.

When families have to travel far from home to receive specialized medical care for their sick child, seeking accommodation in an unfamiliar place only adds to their stress and anxiety. Treatments can sometimes take weeks, months or even years and children need their families close by for comfort and reassurance. Though there is no place like home, Ronald McDonald House strives to provide a safe and comfortable environment where the whole family can stay together for the duration of treatment.

Doctors agree that the House has a dual benefit, as studies have shown that children who have their families close by respond better to treatment. Our House also eases the isolation of what can be a very stressful and frightening time for parents and siblings by providing a place where families can connect and share friendships with other families who are going through similar experiences.

The built-in supportive environment of our House together with caring volunteers, staff and donors greatly assists our mission of providing quality care and services to resident families at a time in their life when they need it most.

Wheelchairs for Kids

Visit Website

Wheelchairs for Kids (Inc) has been producing and supplying wheelchairs to disadvantaged children worldwide for the past 13 years.  Supplying a disabled child in a developing country with a wheelchair will change that child’s life and that of the family.  It enables them to leave their home, interact more fully in their community, and often attend school for the first time.

Managed by the Rotary Club of Scarborough, assisted by the Christian Brothers and with a pool of 100 local volunteers, mostly retirees, working part time in our Wangara workshop, we have produced and dispatched 19,000 wheelchairs.  We are producing up to 300 wheelchairs per month, a rough terrain wheelchair, now designed to World Health Organisation standards.  It is completely adjustable to suit the size and growing needs of children and has postural support facilities.

Due to the generosity of suppliers and transport companies and the efforts of our volunteers, these sturdily constructed wheelchairs only cost us just over $100 each to produce and distribute.  The State Government kindly pays the rent on our premises.

With the assistance of Movies by Burswood, over 200 schools, together with Rotary and other community groups, businesses and private donations, funding is provided to buy materials for the wheelchairs.

An additional team of volunteers produce knee rugs and cushions to add comfort to the wheelchairs.  We aim to instil a sense of community spirit and compassion by working with schools that help with fund raising.  Many of these schools visit the workshop in groups to learn more about the project and the value of their fund raising.

Wheelchairs for Kids is appreciative of Movies by Burswood for recognising us again as a Charity Partner.  Last season, financial support by Movies by Burswood, enabled an additional 1200 disabled children in under-resourced countries to be given a wheelchair.

Friends of Autism

Visit Website

What started out as a backyard operation has grown enormously over the past few years to employ full time therapy and administration staff and currently has two premises.  FOA has the largest Autism specific toy library and resource centre in WA and also offers:

  • families support groups and counselling
  • behavioural therapy sessions
  • school holiday programs and respite
  • social skills groups
  • homework helpers
  • playgroups
  • school transition support

Such rapid growth of the Charity shows the desperate need for the services.  FOA is the only organisation in WA that does not require a formal diagnosis to assist families and with a 2 year wait list in the public system for diagnosis this is an essential and needed service in Western Australia.

Friends of Autism is governed by volunteers, including a board of 5 members, who all oversee our services and are supported by a dedicated Fundraising Committee and group of Volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the continuation of the Charity.

Being privately funded Friends of Autism has always depended on the generosity of the community, and thanks to that generosity we are still active today and adding to our services and growing stronger every year.
